Closing Date Friday 04 Apr 2025

The University of Manchester is more than just a world-class institution—it’s a powerhouse of innovation, ambition, and impact, based in one of the most exciting global cities. As one of the UK’s largest and most prestigious universities, we are home to over 45,000 students, 13,000 staff, and a global network of more than 500,000 alumni who are shaping industries, transforming communities, and driving forward world-changing research. We are ranked among the leading research universities globally and have pioneering research collaborations with the likes of AstraZeneca, Boots and Siemens. In collaboration with our partners, we are leading the development of a new £1.5bn world-class innovation district: Sister, a launchpad for ideas that will bring together academics, entrepreneurs, innovators and industry. The University is now looking to appoint two Lay Members to its Board of Governors with effect from 1 August 2025. As the University’s governing body, the Board has ultimate responsibility for the University’s overall strategic direction and for the management of its finances.

The University is seeking individuals who will bring a breadth of experience at a senior level, alongside knowledge of complex governance from the public, private or third sectors. Based on an assessment of current and future skills needs, the University is looking to attract candidates who bring senior experience in the following two areas; public policy (including but not confined to the higher education sector); and senior leadership in industry, with strong links to and understanding of the Northwest regional economy. Candidates will have a strong grasp of good governance, effective communication skills and a strong track record of achievement in their sector. We welcome expressions of interest from those who have experience of operating in organisations of similar scale and complexity to the University, together with a keen interest in and empathy for Higher Education. The University particularly welcomes applications from underrepresented groups.
