The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Yale University

Director

Job Reference EBHCA
Closing Date Friday 28 Apr 2023 (Now Expired)

Based in London’s Bedford Square in the centre of historic Bloomsbury, the Paul Mellon Centre, an educational charity that is part of Yale University and a partner to the Yale Center for British Art, champions new ways of understanding British art history and culture. Through its academic activities, publications, highly active learning programme and its archives and library, the Paul Mellon Centre is at the forefront of international thought leadership about British art and architecture. Through its generous and active funding programme of fellowships and grants, the Centre also supports innovative scholarship in British art, art history and visual culture.

As Mark Hallett steps down to take up the role as Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, this is a very exciting time to join as the Paul Mellon Centre’s next Director. Under Mark’s tenure, the Paul Mellon Centre has both grown in the scope of its activities and in the scale of its operation. As it continues on its journey of widening and enriching its breadth and reach to further serve its mission of championing new ways of understanding British art history and culture, there is both an extremely strong foundation from which to build upon, and an exciting new chapter of opportunities to move towards.

Candidates will bring senior leadership experience from the museum, gallery or higher education sectors, coupled with a strong academic record and reputation in the field of British Art, or a closely related field. They will have a demonstrable commitment to expanding the remit, appeal and reputation of British art to inspire and engage new audiences and communities. They will bring a collegiate approach to people management as well as the ability to think innovatively and creatively, and to define and deliver strategy. Candidates will also bring experience of working closely with curators, museum and gallery professionals and scholars, as well sound financial acumen and strong stakeholder management skills. Candidates will have a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to widening access.
