The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum
Director

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is one of Europe’s most prestigious and influential cultural institutions. Built in Lisbon in 1969 as a key feature of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation dedicated to the advancement of culture, education, science, and social welfare, the Museum is home to the world-class collection of benefactor and philanthropist, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian. Spanning 5,000 years, from Ancient Egypt to European masterpieces, Islamic art, and exquisite Lalique jewellery, the collection is remarkable and eclectic in nature. As the Museum approaches a transformative moment—marked by an extensive renovation and the Gulbenkian Foundation’s 70th anniversary in 2026—the Museum is poised to redefine its role in the global cultural landscape.
With this in mind, the Board of Trustees is seeking to appoint a Director to lead the Museum into its next chapter. Reporting to the Board, the Director will be responsible for the Museum’s overall strategy, artistic direction, and operational sustainability. The Director will promote audience engagement, forge meaningful partnerships, and ensure the Museum’s continued excellence as a beacon of cultural heritage, innovation, and public engagement.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic and internationally respected leader in the cultural sector, with significant experience in museum or arts institution leadership. The candidate will have a proven track record in strategic planning, financial management, and curatorial or cultural programming that resonates with diverse audiences. A strong commitment to inclusion, learning, and audience development is essential, as is the ability to secure funding, cultivate partnerships, and inspire a high-performing team. The role requires exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, as well as the mindset needed to drive the Museum’s sustainability and global influence.
