SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

Chief Executive Officer

Job Reference XBKVA
Closing Date Monday 05 Aug 2024

As one of the UK’s most prominent tri-service charities, SSAFA, understands that behind every uniform is a person. And we are here for that person and their family, any time they need us and, in any way, they need us. We provide vital practical, emotional, and financial support services for our Forces, veterans and their families: it is essential and life-changing work that ensures no one battles alone.

SSAFA is made up of nearly 400 employees, as well as our amazing network of more than 2,500 dedicated volunteers, who are all passionate about what we do and the impact we have on the lives of our beneficiaries. In 2023 our trained teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 53,000 people, and around £11m was delivered to those in need.

In our 139th anniversary year, SSAFA has gone through a significant transformation towards becoming an even more resilient and robust organisation with sustainable finances, agile resources and an inclusive culture. This puts us in a strong position to continue to respond to the needs of our beneficiaries and make a difference for people who selflessly put their lives on the line day in, day out.

We are now looking for our next Chief Executive to work with our National Chair and Board of Trustees to determine a clear strategy to meet our objectives, lead through organisational and cultural change, and deliver on our mission and vision alongside our colleagues and volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for an exceptional leader, with a deep empathy for the military and mission of SSAFA, to drive forward our organisation and have a tangible and transformative impact on the lives of those who have dedicated themselves to protecting and serving our country.

We are looking for people who are passionate about what we do. We need a Chief Executive who brings strategic and commercial acumen from having held other senior leadership roles and driven growth and change in comparably large and complex organisations. Given the diverse and dispersed nature of our work and teams, we need someone who naturally empowers and motivates teams to perform at their best. You will have outstanding interpersonal skills to build relationships internally and externally and at all levels, and be demonstrably committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. An understanding of, and affinity with, the needs, issues and challenges of the Armed Forces community will help this person quickly establish themselves as a credible and authentic leader to lead our special organisation.

We believe diversity within our teams is key to ensuring we can deliver our services effectively. SSAFA is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace that seeks to recruit, develop and retain the most talented people from a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We therefore encourage applications from all sections of the community.

SSAFA is committed to using the Disclosure & Barring Service to ensure we, as an employer, safeguard those we serve.
