National Trust for Scotland

People Director

Job Reference ENSP
Closing Date Thursday 15 Sep 2022

Established as an independent charity in 1931, the National Trust for Scotland’s core purpose is the promotion of the conservation, access, and enjoyment of Scotland’s places of historic interest and natural beauty. The Trust is Scotland’s largest independent conservation charity, owning and with the responsibility to care for a large portion Scotland’s most significant heritage, from coastlines to castles, art to architecture, gardens to wilderness.

A new strategy has been put in place to direct and guide the charity’s work over the next ten years as it looks forward to its centenary in 2031. Within the strategy, clear priorities have been set, based on three core objectives of conservation, engagement, and sustainability. Included among the objectives are the intentions to be a growing diverse organisation, with a workforce representative of modern Scotland; and to invest in our own people, the volunteers and staff who care for our properties.

An opportunity has arisen to join the Executive Senior Leadership team as People Director, reporting directly into the Chief Executive. Critical to the success of the Trust and the delivery of the new strategy, the post holder will bring a proven track record leading a multi skilled workforce, the ability to implement sound operational systems and process across the Trust and the ability to develop organisational-wide people policies.

The Trust is looking for a values led People Director who will play a key part in the strategic leadership of the Trust, contributing to its future direction and embedding its strategy across the charity. In addition to strong strategic, operational, and planning skills, critical will be the ability to lead, motivate and inspire people. This will be a highly visible leadership role within and without the Trust. Thus, the successful candidate will possess strong stakeholder management skills, working with unions externally and business leaders within the Trust to develop strong working relationships with the People department.
