London
The National Audit Office (NAO) supports the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) in his role as the statutory auditor of government departments, the BBC and a wide range of other public bodies, reporting directly to Parliament. Independent of government, the NAO scrutinises public spending for Parliament and investigates major government projects and programmes. The resulting reports support high profile inquiries by the Public Accounts Committee and other select committees of the House of Commons and play an important role in improving the use of public money and outcomes for citizens.
The term of office of the current Chair, Lord Michael Bichard, will come to an end in January 2021, and Parliament is seeking to appoint his successor.
This is an important role within a high-profile organisation, with responsibility for providing leadership and direction to the board. The Chair sets the agenda for the work of the board and leads the non-executive members in providing constructive challenge and support to the C&AG and executive management team.
Candidates will bring an excellent understanding of public finances, the role of public audit and the C&AG’s unique statutory position in the UK. They will be politically astute, with an awareness of the workings of both local and national government and Parliament, the context of the NAO’s work and Parliamentary accountability. They will have experience at senior board level and will bring strong intellect, sound judgement, common sense and diplomacy. The successful candidate will bring knowledge of governance and will able to help shape strategy, develop robust governance arrangements and monitor performance.
