MHA
Director of Chaplaincy & Spirituality
MHA is one of the largest charity care providers for older people in the UK, and one of the most well-regarded in the provision of residential care, retirement communities and community support services to some 18,000 people across Britain. Established 80 years ago, with an income of over £248m per year and circa 5,600 dedicated staff and over 3,200 volunteers, our mission is to enable people to live later life well. MHA is inspired by a Christian ethos originating from its Methodist roots but is a contemporary organisation which seeks to serve and employ people of all faiths and beliefs.
MHA has a unique model of dedicated Chaplaincy across our 153 care home and retirement living sites across England and Wales. With more than 120 Chaplains across the country, they work with our residents and staff, as well as our wider community of family and friends. The role of Director of Chaplaincy and Spirituality is unique in the sector and has grown under our current Director, to bring a broad and deep impact on the communities we serve, as well as the culture and life of the organisation, from provision of materials and guidance at a local level, to impacting the decision making at Board and in the Executive Team.
The Director leads the Chaplaincy service and MHA’s work on the spiritual well-being of older people within our services and for the wider church and community. This role leads our research and development and specialist strategies covering spirituality, end of life care, music, dementia and green care. Our Director is also the key contact with the Methodist Church, as well as with other denominations and faiths. As a full member of the Executive leadership team takes collective oversight and responsibility of the charity.
The right person will be an ordained Christian Minister in membership of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, or a lay person with significant leadership experience and validated training in a church context. Experience of line management and contribution to senior leadership in an organisation will be important. The right person will bring confidence in being a role model for MHA’s values, and have the energy and vision to develop a wide range of initiatives which are core to who we are.
Reflecting the diverse communities that we are proud to serve, MHA is committed to widening the diversity of its leadership and Board. Therefore, we warmly encourage applications from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
