Metropolitan Police Service
CFO
The Met’s job and mission is clear: keeping London safe for everyone. For most of our people that’s one of the reasons why they joined the Met in the first place. Each officer and member of police staff contributes to making London the safest global city, delivering a police service Londoners can be proud of, and making sure our capital remains open and welcoming to everyone. With nearly 42,000 officers and staff, the Metropolitan Police Service is the UK’s largest police service with 25% of the total police budget for England and Wales. It is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in Greater London and the coordination of significant national responsibilities such as Counter Terrorism.
The Met is looking for an experienced and ambitious CFO who will make its multi-billion-pound budget work for London. The post holder will help transform the function, providing inspirational leadership and making clear operational improvements through the best possible allocation of capital in the short, medium, and longer term, so that its finances translate into its operational priorities. S/he will lead a strategic, best in class function that works alongside the organisation, partnering with leaders to enable informed and robust discussions around productivity, efficiency, and operational delivery. Sitting as a key member of the Commissioner’s management board, s/he will be an operationally credible finance leader who is capable of influencing at board level, driving change, and making risk-based decisions with the ultimate aim of keeping London safe. Externally, they will play an influential role with a range of stakeholders, from the National Police Chief’s Council and MOPAC through to central government departments.
Candidates will be operationally minded finance leaders who are able to operate seamlessly at both strategic and tactical levels. You will bring experience of building capability and driving change through the finance function. An outstanding relationship builder and influencer at senior levels internally and externally, the successful candidate will also be a resilient, solutions-focused people leader. You will have operated in organisations of comparable scale and complexity to the Met. We are open minded as to the sector and organisations within which candidates will have developed these skills and experiences: prior experience in the emergency services is not a requirement, and we are keen to consider candidates from within and outside the public sectors.
