Chair, from 1 October 2021
London; £55,000 per annum
The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of around 113,000 dental professionals, including over 42,000 dentists and 71,000 dental care professionals. The GDC’s primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this it registers qualified professionals, sets and enforces standards of dental practice, investigates fitness to practise complaints, and ensures the quality of dental education.
The environment that the GDC operates within is complex: Brexit, the ongoing impact of COVID-19, and the increasingly divergent healthcare systems across the UK make this a period of significant change for the organisation. We are also seeing changes in the way dentistry is being delivered with new technology and channels emerging. All of this is important, because more people interact with dentistry than any other part of the healthcare system, and the provision of general dentistry services is worth over £7 billion a year.
The Council is looking for a Chair to succeed the incumbent as they come to end of their final term, who will lead the GDC and Council through this period of challenge and change. We are looking for individuals with significant non-executive Board level experience, and chairing experience at Board or Committee level, with senior-level experience in a public sector or regulatory setting. Candidates will have exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, and a proven ability to lead an organisation through change and uncertainty. Candidates from both lay and registrant backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the General Dental Council on this appointment. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from all suitably qualified individuals. We will seek to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly, with respect and without bias. The GDC are part of the Disability Confident scheme and as such are committed to accepting applications from candidates though the scheme.
