General Dental Council

Statutory Panellists Assurance Committee Member (Registrant)

Job Reference AZNN
Closing Date Wednesday 01 May 2024 (Now Expired)

The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates 119,000 dental professionals, including over 45,000 dentists and 74,000 dental care professionals, who overwhelmingly provide excellent dental services across the four nations and share the GDC’s commitment to putting the patient’s interests first. Dental professionals play a vital role in the healthcare system, seeing millions of patients every year. The GDC has a crucial role in ensuring that the public are protected, that they have confidence in dental professionals, and that professional standards are maintained.

The Corporate Strategy 2023-2025 sets out the GDC’s ambitions for the immediate years ahead. Our role in public protection remains unchanged, and our plan will see us continue to modernise and drive improvements in how we operate. Our Council, the GDC’s strategic body, is composed of 12 Members, six of whom are lay Members – from a variety of professional backgrounds – and six are registered dental professionals.

The GDC is now looking for a registrant member to join the Appointments Committee (known as the Statutory Panellists Assurance Committee or SPC). SPC is an independent, non-executive statutory Committee of the GDC whose role is to provide assurance to the Council on a range of functions relating to the appointment and ongoing development of statutory committee members and their advisers. It is an integral part of ensuring the statutory committees’ independence from the Council and helps to ensure that the decisions made by those committees have the confidence of the public and of the professions.

The successful candidate will bring relevant experience gained as a dental professional with current GDC registration, with a commitment to supporting confidence in public services and an understanding of the objectives of professional regulation. With experience of ensuring effective performance and promoting learning and development, you will have knowledge of the role of a non-executive member of a committee. All candidates must demonstrate a track record of contributing to collective decision-making processes, and the ability to operate effectively as a non-executive through open-minded strategic thinking and assimilating complex information to reach effective, fair and independent conclusions.

The GDC is committed to delivering equality, improving diversity and being inclusive in all our work as a healthcare regulator and an employer. As part of this commitment, we actively encourage candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds to apply for this role.
