Ecology Building Society
Chief Financial Officer
As a mission-led organisation, Ecology Building Society exists to improve the environment and society by enabling ecological homes and sustainable communities through the flow of ethical finance between savers and borrowers.
Since being established in 1981, Ecology has been at the forefront of the sustainability agenda, working as a champion for a greener society. We provide mortgages for properties and projects that respect the environment and support sustainable communities funded through our range of simple, transparent savings accounts.
Our impact isn’t just about the profit we make – it’s about the difference we make to the environment and to communities across the UK. In 2021, the Society’s total assets increased by £30.2m to £256.3m, reflecting a record lending performance, supported by strong increase in savings balances. The Society views asset growth as a sign of our success in meeting the needs of our savers and supporting our borrowers to build, renovate or buy sustainable properties.
Last year, Ecology embarked upon an ambitious new 2030 strategy demonstrating how purpose-led ecological businesses can succeed and thrive whilst being aware of the growing tide of greenwash that could spill over and tarnish the reputation of authentic green organisations. We will have an unrelenting focus on impact while providing exceptional service to our members. The CFO role will be a key player in driving the ambition forward, understanding the markets we currently operate in and challenging the norm of where we don’t. As we look to the future the CFO will help drive and mobilise the society towards its growth and impact ambitions of the future.
The finance function, and thus the CFO, have a crucial and demanding role to paly in driving and executing the strategy. The role is wide reaching; the CFO will be empowered to own the finance function, leading a dedicated finance team and driving commercial and strategic activity within the parameters of a dual regulated business. The CFO will provide strategic and operational advice to the CEO, Board and the rest of the Senior Leadership Team, developing and maintaining financial and investment strategies to ensure the long-term growth, financial security, well-being and sustainability of the Society. They will be an intuitive, strong people leader and communicator. Crucially, they will deliver this growth in line with Ecology’ mission and values.
Candidates will be outstanding financial and commercial leaders, bringing an entrepreneurial and enabling mindset as well as a breadth of experience, ideally gained in nimble and agile organisations going through change. Highly effective at strategic and operational levels, they will also have a strong heart for Ecology’s work to champion a greener society.
