Salary: Highly competitive

This is the opportunity to play a vital role in the life of a vibrant, inclusive, forward-thinking College, at the heart of one of the world’s leading academic institutions; the Bursar will deliver outstanding leadership to a broad range of functions and be an active part of a truly special community.

As one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge, Clare College has a rich history and is made up of beautiful period architecture.  Today, we are a global and diverse community, home to students from all backgrounds and a large and active teaching Fellowship, providing inspiration and academic guidance for students. The College is recognised for providing a truly inclusive friendly, supportive environment for bright, engaged students and their interests.

This is a role of unusual breadth, more akin to a COO/CFO, but with a critical core role in advising on the efficient and effective financial management of the College, including the investment portfolio with a wide range of day-to-day operational responsibilities. These include oversight of accommodation and catering services, a complex physical estate, governance and Fellowship matters, HR and regulatory compliance.

The Bursar has six direct reports and a PA. The Bursar will be highly self-motivated, intellectually confident and able to relate in a consensual manner. They will be capable of inspiring, motivating and managing the College’s staff and engaging effectively with both the Fellowship and students, demonstrating to all a real affinity for the academic and charitable and inclusive objectives of the College. They will be highly financially literate and, though not a pre-requisite, it is likely that the appointed candidate will have a relevant professional qualification. As importantly, they will be confident leading operational tasks and have proven experience of effective strategic and financial management in an organisation of significant complexity.
