Berkhamsted Schools Group is a leading independent education provider with a rich heritage dating back to 1541. This Anglican foundation School, located in the picturesque Hertfordshire town of Berkhamsted, the innovative ‘diamond’ structure offers the best of both single-sex and co-educational teaching. The Group provides over 2,000 students aged 3-18 with exceptional educational experiences across six schools, with impressive academic results, national sporting achievements, and a thriving performing arts scene.

The Principal will lead this vibrant community from April/September 2026, succeeding Richard Backhouse after his ten years of outstanding leadership and service to the Group. Working closely with the Governing Body and Executive Team, the successful candidate will shape the strategic vision for the Group’s future while preserving the core values. The role involves providing strategic direction and oversight on all educational and organisational matters, ensuring excellence in teaching and learning, maintaining strong community relationships, and promoting a culture that focuses on developing remarkable people – both amongst students and staff. Although the Principal is not solely responsible for any one of the schools, they will be a visible and known presence across those school communities.

Berkhamsted Schools Group seeks an experienced school leader with proven success managing a large, complex educational institution. The ideal candidate will bring strategic thinking, strong financial understanding, and outstanding communication skills. This role requires a collaborative leadership approach, excellent judgment, and genuine interest in young people’s development. Most importantly, the new Principal must possess the energy and drive to lead Berkhamsted through its next chapter, carefully balancing respect for tradition with innovation.
