Alopecia UK
Chair of Trustees
Founded nearly 20 years ago, Alopecia UK is a rapidly growing charity with national reach that works to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia. It does this through three key strands: Support, Awareness and Research.
Alopecia simply means hair loss; it presents in varying degrees of severity from small patches of loss on the head or bead, total loss of hair on the scalp, through to full body hair loss. This dramatic change in appearance, while not life threatening, is certainly life changing.
The largest UK charity supporting alopecia, it has grown from an entirely voluntary-led organisation to have an established office in Shipley, West Yorkshire with a Trustee board, a current permanent staff of six supported by a large, nationwide team of volunteers. Whilst still small with a turnover under £500,000 it has ambitious growth plans under the leadership of a new CEO. At its heart is a mission-driven and collegiate culture that strives to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia and their families.
Operating across three key areas, Alopecia UK offers Support by facilitating peer support across the UK in the form of events, support groups and one-to-one contact, offering information and advice on the condition and how to navigate its impact. It seeks to raise Awareness through media campaigns, information provision and via working with related charities and the relevant healthcare communities. A key strand of its work is Research; it distributes grants and commissions its own research, working with a network of medical partners. It also helps to facilitate this research by recruiting volunteers from its community.
Alopecia UK’s current Chair is stepping down this year, after eight years of service. The charity is seeking to appoint a successor who will be a passionate advocate for the charity and lead the Trustee Board in setting the strategic vision for Alopecia UK as it enters the next phase in its growth and development, whilst upholding a strong values-led culture.
