Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
Chief Scientific Adviser
We are the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), created to position the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement. Building on the UK’s strong foundations of world-class research, a thriving technology scene and global networks of collaboration, we will help outstanding science result in innovations that change lives and create economic growth. As a department, our goal is to cement the UK’s place as a global science and technology superpower by 2030, by growing the economy, creating high-paid jobs of the future, protecting our security, and radically improving people’s lives through science, innovation and technology.
DSIT is a stimulating, inspiring organisation, offering challenging and fascinating work that really makes a difference. The role of the Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) is at the heart of our mission to ensure the work of DSIT is underpinned by the best possible research and evidence. We are seeking someone who is inspired by our agenda and wants to help us improve how we work.
We are looking for an exceptional individual to join us as our CSA. This is a high-profile and influential role, reporting to the National Technology Adviser and the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, providing the highest quality advice on science, innovation and technology, and advising on how government policy can grow strategic advantage through science and technology for the UK. You will provide scientific advice across DSIT and drive the departmental science system to ensure the Department’s policies are based on the best available science and engineering evidence. As an active participant in the cross-government Chief Scientific Adviser network, you will help ensure that policy decisions are evidence based and underpinned by the highest quality science and engineering evidence and understanding.
The successful candidate will be recognised as a science leader with an area of expertise relevant to DSIT’s policy remit, in particular in the translation of research to societal or economic benefit. You will also be collaborative to enable you to work across academia, other Government departments as well as making links with industry. You will be able to work fluently across a range of disciplines, and be excellent at communicating complex scientific issues clearly to a range of audiences. We actively welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds, with different experiences and perspectives – diversity is vital to the success of this role.
