Gainsborough’s House

Director

Job Reference EGAIB
Closing Date Monday 20 Nov 2023

Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury is the historic home of Thomas Gainsborough and a museum, gallery and national centre for the artist’s work. Following a transformational £10m refurbishment and building project to create a new gallery building adjoining the original Grade I listed house, Gainsborough’s House is now set to embark on an exciting new chapter, with new spaces to host major exhibitions and events, the largest print workshop of its kind in East Anglia, and the creation of an open glass-fronted café and terrace named “The Watering Place” after Gainsborough’s famous landscape.

Gainsborough’s House is at the cusp of an extremely exciting new chapter of its history, and the board of Trustees is now seeking a new Director to lead the new organisation.

The Director will work with the new Chair of Trustees, Professor Simon Ofield-Kerr, the Board and a range of other stakeholders to identify and deliver the next phase of Gainsborough’s House development, with day-to-day responsibility for the museum’s operational management through the leadership of its staff and body of committed volunteers. The ideal candidate will be both a strategic and visionary leader, and a dedicated team player, bringing a strong track record of collegiate leadership, a strategic and entrepreneurial approach, the ability to advocate on behalf of Gainsborough’s House, and excellent stakeholder management skills. They will ideally also bring knowledge and credibility in relation to the research into and presentation of the life and work of Thomas Gainsborough, other artists of the period and his influence.
