Glasgow Caledonian University
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), the University for the Common Good, is a vibrant, values-led, multi-cultural, civic university with a global outlook and commitment to delivering social innovation and sustainable development. The University is ranked fifth in the world and first in the UK for promoting gender equality, in the top 6% globally for social impact, the top Modern University in Scotland for research power, and second in Scotland for environmental and ethical performance.
GCU’s welcoming university community of 1,500 staff and nearly 22,000 students from more than 100 countries enjoys state-of-the-art facilities across each of our campuses in Glasgow, London and New York, with transnational partnerships in China, South Africa, Oman and Mauritius. Its success as a globally connected university is demonstrated by a doubling of the number of new international students coming to our UK campuses in 2021-22.
GCU is now looking to appoint a dynamic leader to help it shape and further its ambitions. The new Principal and Vice Chancellor will inherit a strong and successful institution – financially secure, and with exceptional institutional buy-in for the concept of the University for the Common Good. This is allied to a willingness to embrace change, build on the University’s strengths and develop the next chapter of its story.
The new Principal & Vice-Chancellor will provide inspirational academic and strategic leadership characterised by personal integrity and a deep commitment to the University’s mission for the common good. Alignment with GCU’s values of creativity, confidence, responsibility, and integrity, alongside the ability to deliver excellence in education, a strong research culture and a sustainable future are key attributes.
Strong candidates will bring an excellent understanding of higher education policy and funding alongside a highly credible academic background and experience at an executive level. Demonstrable strategic leadership capabilities from a similarly complex environment, a proven track record of operational management and evidence of building strong collaborative partnerships both nationally and internationally are highly sought attributes. A clear commitment to widening access, equality, diversity and inclusion is essential.
